GROW is a European community of growers, scientists researchers and others passionate about the land, working to better manage soil and grow food, while contributing to scientific environmental monitoring.

Laura worked with the GROW team to design, develop and run four Massive Online Open Courses (MOOCs) on the topics of citizen science, food growing and environmental monitoring. During the project, she collaborated with subject matter experts (SMEs) to design and write content, write video scripts, liaise with external video and graphic content producers, populate the platform, run live courses and arrange webinars. She was also involved in post-course revision.

Across the four courses, the GROW Observatory has welcomed over 8000 learners from around the world, so far. View and sign up to the courses via FutureLearn.

Citizen Research: From Data to Action
The Knowledge into Action at Scale project, run by The University of Dundee, The University of the West of Scotland and The Scottish Improvement Science Collaborating Centre, produced two Massive Online Open Courses (MOOCs) for health and social care professionals and is researching the potential to change behaviour via digital learning.
Laura worked with a cross-institutional team of academics and researchers, leading the production of both MOOCs – one on the topic of compassionate care, and the other focusing on health inequalities – for the FutureLearn platform. Alongside this team, she designed the curriculum, wrote and edited content and video scripts, worked with video producers to create videos and animations, designed graphics and interactive contents, promoted the courses and managed live course runs. She was also involved in the wider research project, and on post-course revisions based on learner feedback and research plans.
The first paper resulting from the project, Large-scale online education programmes and their potential to effect change in behaviour and practice of health and social care professionals: A rapid systematic review, was published in early 2018 with others to follow.
Across the two MOOCs, the project team have welcomed over 16,000 learners from the UK and around the world.

John and Laura were both also involved in communications for the The Scottish Improvement Science Collaborating Centre, work which included website design, infographics, video production, events and digital skills training.

The Open University is the UK’s largest academic institution by student numbers. It focuses on distance learning, which it has been offering since the 1970s. It is recognised for its work and research in online and distance education, and it is involved in open education resources (OERs) as well as massive online open courses (MOOCs), via the FutureLearn platform, which it started in 2013.

Laura worked with the Open University in a learning media development role. She researched and created concepts for assets used in social science modules, including interactive media, infographics and data visualisations. She also provided best practice guidance and training for faculty members on writing for the web and eLearning design. She worked with faculty members and graphic/interactive developers to convert text-based material into engaging digital content.
